New French edition translated by Emile Littré on the last German edition. Strauss's works precede those of Renan on the historical approach to the life of Jesus. This book caused a scandal when it was first published in Germany and led to its author being dismissed from his post as philosophy tutor at the Protestant seminary in Tübingen.
Inspired by the Hegelian philosophy of history, this book founded the movement of the Young Hegelians which will inspire all left movements in Germany in the nineteenth century.
